Understanding Your Quality Point Index (QPI)

In the Philippines, major academic institutions—particularly the Ateneo university system (Ateneo de Manila, Xavier University, Ateneo de Davao, etc.)—use the Quality Point Index (QPI) to measure a student's academic standing instead of the standard Grade Point Average (GPA).

Our free QPI Calculator is built specifically for college students who want to quickly project their semester grades, track their retention requirements, or see if they qualify for the Dean's List and Latin Honors.

How is the QPI Computed?

The math behind your QPI relies on a weighted average formula:

QPI = (Total Quality Points) ÷ (Total Number of Units)

  • Quality Points: This is obtained by multiplying the numerical equivalent of your Letter Grade by the total units of the subject. (e.g., An 'A' in a 3-unit subject gives you 3 units × 4.0 = 12 Quality Points).
  • Total Units: The sum of all credited units you are enrolled in for the semester.

Standard QPI Grade Equivalents

To use this tool effectively, you should be familiar with the standard letter-grade scale used by most Ateneo schools. Here is how letter grades translate to numerical points:

A4.00 (Excellent)
B+3.50 (Very Good)
B3.00 (Good)
C+2.50 (Satisfactory)
C2.00 (Sufficient)
D1.00 (Pass)
F / W0.00 (Failure)

Latin Honors & Dean's Lister Qualifications

Wondering if you made the cut? Based on standard university guidelines, our tool will automatically tag your result with your corresponding academic standing:

  • Summa Cum Laude: 3.87 – 4.00 QPI
  • Magna Cum Laude: 3.70 – 3.86 QPI
  • Cum Laude: 3.50 – 3.69 QPI
  • Dean's Lister: Usually 3.35 or higher (varies per department, typically requires no grade below C).

Pro Tip: You can use this calculator mid-semester to run "what-if" scenarios. Enter your target grades to see exactly what you need on your finals to maintain your scholarship or hit the Dean's list.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between QPI and GPA?
Technically, both operate on the same mathematical concept of a weighted average. The main difference is regional and institutional terminology. "GPA" is standard in the US and global schools, while "QPI" is uniquely utilized by the Ateneo system and a few other universities in the Philippines.
How are withdrawn subjects (W) calculated?
If you officially withdrew from a course before the deadline (WP - Withdrawn with Permission), you should simply exclude that subject from the calculator as it does not bear units. However, an unofficial withdrawal that yields a failing mark should be inputted as an F (0.00).
Can I use this to compute my Cumulative QPI (CQPI)?
Yes, absolutely! Just keep clicking the "Add Another Subject" button and input all the subjects you have taken across multiple semesters to get your overall Cumulative QPI.
